11.07.2013 | ST. PETERSBURG PIER RENOVATION – A CONCEPT STUDY  | ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA

A New St. Petersburg Pier

We believe there is a design approach to the new St. Petersburg Pier that will come in on budget, solve the major functional problems with the recently closed pier and bring our community together with a symbol worthy of our great waterfront city. We envision the inverted pyramid renovated and re-imagined with a fresh, new look. It would be reduced to less than half its current size and would be a destination dining experience for the entire Tampa Bay area. The new pier would be half of the width of the existing one with trolley lanes in the center and generous pedestrian walkways on both sides. Along its southern edge would be a continuous solar canopy – a shade structure lined with solar panels. Due to the reduced size of both the pier and pyramid, there will be millions of dollars left for improvements on the Uplands. Overlooking a rejuvenated Spa Beach will be a large plaza for special events. Surrounding the plaza will be a cluster of amenities and attractions that together celebrate St. Petersburg’s extraordinary outdoor lifestyle.

The historic Manhattan Casino in Saint Petersburg and McCollum Hall in Fort Myers will each soon have a “Sylvia’s Queen of Soul Food” restaurant Sylvia’s Restaurant.  From the 1920’s to the 1960’s both buildings were the entertainment centers for the local African American community with retail spaces on the first floor and a dance hall above that hosted such legends as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and James Brown. Sylvia’s is a Harlem institution and celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2012. Mesh Architecture is designing the first floor restaurant space for each location as well as repositioning the second floor space into an event hall.
